EAI - Applications in Psychology
Do you know someone who suffers from depression? I bet your
answer is yes, it can be either a friend, a family member or a friend of a
friend. What would you recommend them to do? Go see a psychologist?
What is the first thing that comes up to your mind when I say
emotions? I might not know your specific answer, but I know you eventually thought
about the direct relation in between humans and emotions.
Could you imagine a robot that can understand your feelings as
the same level of a human? It might sound crazy at a first glance, but thanks
to EAI it is now a reality.
The Freudian theory states that psychologists can not get
emotionally involved with their patients, due to subjectivity and the temptation
to provide personal advice. If we further analyze this, we will come to the
conclusion that this trait is normal, as it reflects the natural human instinct
of being compassionate.
I am not trying to discredit psychologists, I am trying to
incentivize the idea of virtual therapists, the idea that a robot can
understand, interpret, and evaluate your feelings without having a biased opinion.
Woebot is a smart phone application that allows you to
interact with a friendly self-care expert. Through this app, you can interact
with a robot that will give you step-by-step guidance to help you in any mental
situation. This is possible because Woebot has an intelligent brain sensory device
with the purpose of helping you reduce your daily stress leading you to a higher
quality of life.
This app approximately has two million users who engage in daily
conversations with the robot. Part of this success is due to the fact that peoples’
willingness to talk to a robot-psychologist is hire because they are not being judged.
Now it doesn’t sound that crazy, right?
Emotions and technology, believe it or not, are now related.
